What Is a Hash Hole Joint?

Quick answer: A hash hole is a joint with a thin rope of hash or rosin running through its center, packed in with flower. As the joint burns, the concentrate burns slowly down the middle. Some people call it a donut, after the ring you see on the lit end.

Why do people roll hash holes?

  • A slower burn. The concentrate sits in the core instead of being mixed in, so it burns more evenly.
  • A stronger joint. Adding concentrate makes the joint more potent than flower alone. Go easy if you're new to it.
  • The look. The ring at the cherry is a big part of the appeal.

Hash or rosin: which one?

Both work. What matters is that the concentrate holds a shape.

RosinPressed hash
ShapingRolls into a rope easily, especially when slightly warmBreaks if too dry, shapes if pressed
BurnCan melt and run if the rope is too thickBurns steadily
Common useThe usual choice for hash holesTraditional, and works well

Very oily or runny concentrates are hard to keep in place and tend to leak through the paper.

What size joint is a hash hole?

Hash holes are usually bigger than an everyday joint, often king size or a cone, so there's enough flower around the core. A thin joint doesn't leave room for the rope. How much concentrate to use is covered in how much hash for a hash hole.

Do you need a special tip?

No. Glass and wood tips are popular for hash holes, but a disposable tip works if it's wide enough. A 12mm tip fits the bigger rolls. Keep the concentrate stopped short of the tip so it doesn't melt toward your mouth. The full method is in how to roll a hash hole with a paper tip, and tip widths are in the filter tip size guide.
