12mm Filter Tips: What Wide Tips Are For and How to Roll Around One

Quick answer: A 12mm filter tip is a wide tip, 12mm across, made for big rolls: king size papers, hand-rolled cones, and heavy or elaborate builds that need an open mouthpiece and a sturdy base. Pair it with king size papers so the paper has enough width to wrap and seal over the tip. If you usually roll small, stick with a 7mm or 8mm tip instead.

What is a 12mm filter tip?

Tip sizes are listed as diameter x length. Das 12mm tips are 12mm x 30mm: 12mm across and 30mm long. For comparison, our other sizes are the Slim Jim (6mm x 28mm), Midway (7mm x 28mm) and Big Boy (8mm x 37mm).

Going from 8mm to 12mm changes the whole roll. The tip sets how wide the roll is at your lips, so a 12mm tip means a noticeably fatter, more open mouthpiece and a roll that stays wide from end to end.

What are wide tips actually for?

• Big rolls. A large roll on a skinny tip tends to pinch and sag right above the tip. A wide tip gives it a real foundation.
• Group sessions. Something that gets passed around a lot needs a firm, open end that holds up.
• Cones. A hand-rolled cone builds out from the tip, so a wide tip means a wide, stable narrow end.
• Elaborate builds. Layered or "hash hole" style rolls need the roll to stay open and structured. Wide tips are the go-to for that.

What papers go with a 12mm tip?

Paper width decides how much wrap you have to work with.

• King size: the natural match. Enough width to go around a 12mm tip with a clean overlap and room for the gum line.
• 1 1/4: possible if you roll tight, but the overlap over the tip gets very thin and the seam can wrinkle or pop.
• Single wide / slim: no. There isn't enough paper.

How do you roll around a 12mm tip?

Rolling around a wide tip is easier than it looks. The tip does a lot of the shaping for you.

1. Lay out a king size paper, gum line up and away from you, on a clean surface. A rolling mat helps keep things tidy on a big roll.
2. Set the tip at one end, flush with the edge of the paper and square to it. A crooked tip gives you a crooked roll.
3. Load your material evenly along the paper. With a wide tip you can load a little heavier near the tip than you would with a slim one, since the roll stays wide there.
4. Shape first. Pinch the paper and roll the material back and forth between your fingers to form a cylinder the same diameter as the tip.
5. Tuck at the tip end first. Tuck the near edge of the paper around the tip, then work the tuck along the rest of the roll. The tip gives you a firm anchor.
6. Roll up and seal. Roll the rest of the paper up, lightly moisten the gum line, and press it down, starting at the tip.
7. Pack the open end gently and twist or fold it closed. Pack lightly. Jamming it from the open end can push the tip back out.

How do you roll a cone with a 12mm tip?

Same start, different angle. Put the tip at one end, then angle the paper as you roll so it flares out toward the far end. The wide tip sets a generous narrow end, and the cone widens from there. Load less material near the tip and more toward the wide end so the shape follows. The filter tip size guide has more on tips for cones.

Can you use a 12mm tip in a rolling machine?

Only if the machine is big enough. The barrel has to fit the tip plus material. A 1 1/4 machine is usually too small for a 12mm tip. A king size rolling machine gives you much more room. Test one in yours before you roll a whole batch. We cover machines in detail in how to use a rolling machine.

What goes wrong with wide tips?

The paper won't overlap the tip. Your paper is too narrow. Move up to king size.

The seam over the tip wrinkles or splits. The tuck was loose or the paper is too narrow. Tuck tighter right at the tip, and seal starting from the tip end.

The roll narrows right after the tip (hourglass shape). You loaded too little material near the tip. Wide tip, wide roll: carry the fill all the way to the tip.

The tip slides out when you pack the end. Pack the open end with light taps, and hold the tip end while you do it.

12mm glass tips vs disposable 12mm tips?
