How to Roll a King Size Joint (and Which King Size Paper to Use)
Quick answer: A king size joint rolls the same way as any joint, just longer. Put an 8mm tip at one end of a king size paper, spread about a gram of evenly ground flower along the crease, shape it into a cylinder, tuck the paper starting at the tip end, then roll up, seal and pack the open end. King size slim papers roll a longer joint without the extra width and take a little less flower.
King size or king size slim?
Check the booklet before you start. "King size" covers two different papers:
| Paper | Size (approx.) | Rolls | Typical fill | Tip that fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| King size slim | 108–110 x 44mm | Long and slim | A little under 1g | Midway 7mm or Big Boy 8mm |
| King size (regular) | 108–110 x 53–60mm | Long and full | About 1g | Big Boy 8mm, or 12mm for a big roll |
Sizes vary by a millimeter or two between brands. The full chart is in our rolling paper sizes guide, and the size calculator matches a tip to your paper.
What you need
- A king size or king size slim paper
- A filter tip (see the table above) or a folded crutch
- About a gram of flower, ground medium-fine
- Something to pack with: a pen, chopstick or poker
- Optional: a tray or mat to catch what falls
Step 1: Set up the paper
Lay the paper with the glue strip up and along the far edge, and crease it lengthwise into a shallow V. Put the tip in the crease at one end, flush with the edge.
Step 2: Spread the flower evenly
This matters more on a king size than on a short paper. Spread the flower in an even line along the full length of the crease, right up to the far end. Lumps or a thin patch in the middle are what make a long joint bend or burn unevenly later.
Step 3: Shape it
Pinch the paper between your thumbs and fingers and roll it back and forth to pack the flower into an even cylinder. Work along the length so the middle matches the ends.
Step 4: Tuck in sections
Start at the tip end, where the tip gives you a firm edge. Tuck the bottom edge of the paper (the side without glue) over the flower and under. Then work the tuck along the joint an inch or so at a time. Tucking a long paper in one go is where most king size rolls go loose.
Step 5: Roll up and seal
Roll the tucked joint upward until only the glue strip shows. Lick or lightly dampen the gum and press it closed, again working from the tip end along the length.
Step 6: Pack and twist
Tap the joint tip-down, then gently pack the open end with your pen or poker. Top it up if there's a gap, and twist the end closed. Light it evenly; how to light a joint covers the toast-then-light method.
Common king size problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bends or sags in the middle | Thin patch of flower in the middle | Spread evenly along the whole crease; pack gently from the open end |
| Paper won't close around the tip | Tip too wide for a slim paper | Use 7mm or 8mm with king size slim |
| Paper bunches above the tip | Tip too narrow for a wide paper | Go up to 8mm, or 12mm for a big roll |
| Burns down one side | Uneven pack or lighting | See why does my joint canoe |
| Too much paper at the seam | Wide paper, small fill | Fill a little more, or backroll it to lose the extra layer |
Rolling a lot of them?
A rolling machine sized for king size papers makes every roll the same length and thickness. A 1 1/4 machine won't take king size papers, so match the machine to the paper. Our King Size Rolling Machine is made for king size papers, and Big Boy 8mm tips fit most king size rolls.

Frequently asked questions
How much weed goes in a king size joint?
Roughly 1 gram for a regular king size paper. King size slim holds a bit less because it's narrower. Start a little under and add more once you know how your paper rolls.
What's the difference between king size and king size slim?
Both are about 108 to 110mm long. King size slim is about 44mm wide, the same as 1 1/4, so it rolls a long, slim joint. Regular king size is about 53 to 60mm wide and rolls a fatter one.
What size filter tip goes with king size papers?
An 8mm tip suits most king size rolls. A 7mm or 8mm fits king size slim. A 12mm tip works for a big, full king size roll.
Why does my king size joint bend in the middle?
The flower isn't spread evenly, so the middle is thinner than the ends. Spread it in an even line along the whole crease before you tuck, and pack it gently from the open end once it's rolled.
Is a king size joint harder to roll than a 1 1/4?
A little. The extra length gives the paper more room to go loose or uneven. Start the tuck at the tip end and work along the length in short sections instead of trying to tuck it all at once.
