How to Light a Joint Evenly, With or Without a Lighter
Quick answer: To light a joint, hold it at a slight angle with the flame just below the open end, and turn it slowly until the whole end is toasted and glowing. Don't draw yet. Once it glows all the way around, take two or three short, gentle puffs to set the burn, then smoke as usual.
A joint that burns down one side is usually a rolling problem, but lighting one side first can cause it too. Lighting it evenly is the easy part to get right.
What you need
- A rolled joint, cone or pre-roll (new to rolling? Start with how to roll a joint)
- A lighter, matches or a hemp wick
- Somewhere out of the wind
A filter tip also makes the mouth end easy to find. Das Midway 7mm tips fit 1 1/4 papers.
How to light a joint, step by step
- Find the right end. You light the wide, open end, opposite the filter tip or mouth end.
- Burn off the twist. If that end is twisted shut, light the twist first and let it burn down to the flower.
- Hold the flame below the end. Keep the joint out of your mouth, angled slightly down, with the flame just under the end. The heat does the work; you don't need to push the flower into the flame.
- Turn it slowly. Roll the joint between your thumb and finger so every side of the end gets heat. The paper darkens and the flower starts to glow.
- Check the end. Pull the flame away and look. The whole end should glow evenly. If one side is still pale, give that side a little more heat.
- Take short, gentle draws. Put it in your mouth and take two or three small puffs to set the burn. Hard pulls right away can make it burn unevenly.
Lighter, matches or hemp wick?
All three work. It comes down to what you have and what you like.
| Flame | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Lighter | Easy, works anywhere | Don't draw while the flame is on the paper |
| Matches | No lighter needed | Let the head flare and settle for a couple of seconds first |
| Hemp wick | A small, steady flame | It drips wax if you tilt it; put it out fully after |
Using a hemp wick: a hemp wick is hemp string coated in beeswax. Light the end with a lighter or match, let the flame settle, then use it to toast the joint the same way. Some people prefer it because they say it keeps the lighter's taste out of the first puff. To put it out, pinch it with damp fingers or dip it in water.
Torch lighters run hotter than a normal joint needs, which makes it easy to scorch one side.
How to light a joint without a lighter
- Matches. The simplest swap. Cup your hand around them outdoors.
- A hemp wick lit from a candle or gas stove. Light the wick, step away from the burner, and light the joint with the wick. Don't lean in over a stove.
Skip improvised tricks like a battery and gum wrapper or a magnifying glass. They're slow, hard to aim, and easy to burn your fingers with.
How to light a joint outside
Wind does two things: it blows out the flame, and it makes the side facing the breeze burn faster. Turn your back to the wind, cup your hand around the flame, and keep turning the joint as you light it. If it starts to run on one side, see the fix below.
Lighting cones, blunts and pre-rolls
The method is the same for a cone or a dispensary pre-roll: burn off the twist, then toast the wide end while turning it. A blunt is thicker, so it takes a little longer to catch all the way around. Keep turning until the whole end glows before your first puff.
Why your joint keeps going out
- Damp flower. It's hard to keep lit. Let it dry a little before you roll.
- Packed too tight. If drawing feels like a wall, air can't reach the burn. Roll a little looser next time; the pillar guide covers packing.
- Ground too fine. Powdery flower packs dense. A medium grind burns more steadily.
- Long gaps between puffs. Joints go out when they sit. That's normal.
How to relight a joint
Tap off any loose ash, then toast the end while turning it, the same as the first light, and take a gentle puff. If the end has gone ragged, pinch off the burnt paper first so it lights cleanly.
The joint is burning down one side
That's called canoeing. Put the flame to the slow side for a moment until the burn line evens out. If it keeps happening, the cause is usually uneven packing or a loose tuck, not the lighting. Why does my joint canoe has the full fix.
Saving the rest for later
To put a joint out, press the lit end gently against an ashtray until it stops smoking, or pinch it with damp fingers. To keep the rest from drying out, see how to store joints.
Frequently asked questions
How do you light a joint evenly?
Hold the flame just below the end, not in it, and turn the joint slowly until the whole end is dark and glowing. Then take a few short, gentle draws.
Should you inhale while lighting a joint?
Not at first. Toast the end without drawing, then take short puffs once it's glowing. Pulling hard while the flame is on tends to drag the burn to one side.
Which end of a joint do you light?
The wide, open end, opposite the filter tip or mouth end. If that end is twisted shut, burn the twist off first.
How do you light a joint without a lighter?
Use matches, or light a hemp wick from a candle or gas stove and light the joint with the wick. Let a match burn for a couple of seconds before you bring it to the joint.
Why does my joint keep going out?
The usual reasons are damp flower, a roll packed too tight to draw through, or long gaps between puffs. Relight the end while turning it and keep the draws regular.
