Quick answer: Open the wrap and soften it, lay a wide tip (crutch) at one end, fill evenly up to the tip, tuck the edge over the filling starting at the tip, roll it closed, seal with a little moisture, and let it dry. Use an 8mm tip for a standard blunt and a 12mm tip for a fat one. Whether you need a tip at all is covered in do blunts need a filter tip.

What you need

  • A blunt wrap: a hemp wrap, or a split cigarillo with the filling removed
  • A tip: 8mm for a cigarillo-size blunt, 12mm for a large wrap
  • Ground flower, medium grind
  • A rolling tray or clean, flat surface

Steps

  1. Open the wrap. For a cigarillo, slit it lengthwise along the seam and empty it. For a hemp wrap, just unroll it.
  2. Soften it. Run a barely damp fingertip along the wrap until it bends without cracking.
  3. Set the tip. Lay the tip across one end, flush with the edge.
  4. Fill it. Spread flower evenly from the tip to the far end. Keep it level. Lumps cause lopsided burns.
  5. Tuck at the tip. Roll the wrap around the tip first. The tip is firm, so it gives you a straight starting point for the tuck.
  6. Roll the rest. Work from the tip toward the far end, tucking the near edge under the filling and rolling it closed.
  7. Seal it. Lightly wet the outer edge and press it down along the seam.
  8. Dry it. Pass a lighter flame under it quickly, without touching, or let it sit a few minutes. A dry seam burns more evenly.

Which tip size fits a blunt?

BluntTip sizeDas tip
Standard cigarillo-size8mmBig Boy (8mm x 37mm)
Fat blunt or large wrap12mm12mm (12mm x 30mm)

A tip that's too thin leaves a gap, and the wrap collapses around it. A tip that's too wide won't let the wrap close. The full chart is in the filter tip size guide.

Common mistakes

  • Dry wrap. It splits on the tuck. Soften it first.
  • Too wet. A soaked wrap tears and burns unevenly.
  • Overfilling. The seam won't close. Take some out.
  • Uneven filling. The thin side burns first and the blunt runs.
  • Adding the tip last. Pushing a tip into a rolled blunt often tears the wrap. Set it first.
