How to Roll a Cone

Hands rolling a sheet of paper into a cone

Quick answer: Set the tip at one end of the paper and angle it slightly, so the paper wraps tight at the tip and loose at the far end. Put more flower at the far end, roll from the tip, seal, then pack the wide end and twist it closed. King size paper and an 8mm or 12mm tip are the easiest to start with.

What you need

  • King size paper (more room to angle than smaller sizes)
  • A tip: 8mm, or 12mm for a wider mouth end
  • Ground flower, medium grind
  • A packing stick or pen

Steps

  1. Lay the paper. Glue strip facing up, along the edge farthest from you.
  2. Set and angle the tip. Place the tip at one end and tilt it so it points slightly toward the glue strip. This angle is what makes the cone shape.
  3. Fill heavier at the far end. A little flower near the tip, more toward the open end.
  4. Shape. Roll the paper between your fingers to pack the filling, keeping the tip end tight and the far end loose.
  5. Tuck and roll. Tuck at the tip end first, then roll up toward the glue. The paper will overlap more at the tip and less at the far end.
  6. Seal. Lick the strip lightly and press it closed from the tip end out.
  7. Pack and twist. Tap the cone tip-down, pack the wide end lightly with a pen, top off if needed, and twist it shut.

Using a pre-rolled cone

Pre-rolled cones are already shaped and tipped. Fill a little at a time, tap to settle, pack lightly, and twist. Sizes are in our pre-rolled cones guide. If you prefer a leaf wrap, see how to pack a banana leaf cone.

Common mistakes

  • No angle. You end up with a straight joint.
  • Too much at the tip. The narrow end clogs and won't draw.
  • Overfilled wide end. The seam won't close there. Take some out.
  • Lighting one side. Cones have a wide end. Light the whole edge while turning, or it runs.

Why use a wide tip

A cone's narrow end is where you draw from. A wider tip keeps that end open. Our 12mm (12mm x 30mm) is made for king size cones; the Big Boy (8mm x 37mm) is the standard fit. More on tip widths is in best filter tip size.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a cone and a joint?

A joint is the same width end to end. A cone is narrow at the tip and wide at the open end.

Is it easier to roll a cone or a joint?

A straight joint is usually easier. Pre-rolled cones skip the rolling.

What tip goes in a cone?

8mm in a king size cone, or 12mm for a wider mouth end.

How do you keep a cone from running?

Pack evenly, don't overfill the wide end, and light the whole edge while turning.
