How Many Joints Can You Roll From an Eighth?

Quick answer: An eighth is 3.5 grams. Rolled as half-gram joints, that's about 7 joints. Rolled king size at about a gram each, it's about 3. Rolled as thin pinners at around 0.3 grams, it's 10 or more. Stems and seeds take a little off the top.

There's no standard amount of weed in a joint, so the real answer depends on what paper you use and how full you roll. The table below covers the common sizes.

Joints per eighth, by joint size

Joint sizeAbout how much it holdsJoints from an eighth (3.5g)Tip that fits
Pinner (thin, often a single wide paper)0.2–0.3g11–176mm (Slim Jim)
1 1/4 paper0.5gAbout 77mm (Midway) or 8mm
1 1/4, rolled full0.75gAbout 47mm or 8mm
King size paperAbout 1gAbout 38mm (Big Boy) or 12mm

These are rough. How fine you grind and how tight you pack both change the count. Our size calculator does the same math for any amount and paper or cone size, and the rolling paper sizes guide has the measurements for each paper.

How to split an eighth evenly

With a scale. Weigh out each joint's worth before you roll. A small pocket scale that reads to 0.1 gram is enough.

Without a scale. Grind the whole eighth, spread it out, and divide it into equal piles by eye. Seven piles gives you half-gram joints. Halve the pile and halve again to keep them even.

With a rolling machine. A machine fills the same way every time, so once you find a fill you like, each joint comes out about the same. See how to use a rolling machine.

Why your count comes up short

  • Stems and seeds. They come out before you grind, and they weigh something.
  • Overfilling. It's the most common reason. An overfilled paper is also harder to roll and more likely to canoe.
  • Grinding too fine. Powder packs denser, so each joint takes more.
  • Loose bits. Flower that falls off the paper adds up over seven joints. Roll over a tray or mat and tip it back in.

A filter tip won't stretch your eighth, but it does stop flower from falling out of the mouth end, and it gives you something to hold so you can smoke the joint closer to the end without burning your fingers.

Cones instead of papers

Pre-rolled cones hold about the same as the matching paper size: around 0.5–0.75g for a 1 1/4 (98mm) cone and about a gram for king size. That's 4 to 7 1 1/4 cones from an eighth, or about 3 king size.

New to rolling? Start with how to roll a joint. Start with less flower than you think you need; a lighter fill is easier to roll.

Frequently asked questions

How many joints are in an eighth?

About 7 if you roll half-gram joints. An eighth is 3.5 grams, so it's about 3 joints at 1 gram each, or 10 or more small pinners at around 0.3 grams.

How much weed goes in a joint?

There's no set amount. Around half a gram is a common amount for a 1 1/4 paper, about a gram for king size, and roughly 0.2 to 0.3 grams for a thin pinner.

How many joints are in a gram?

About 2 half-gram joints, 1 king size joint, or 3 to 4 pinners.

How many joints are in a quarter or an ounce?

A quarter (7 grams) makes about 14 half-gram joints. An ounce (about 28 grams) makes about 56. Expect a few less after stems and seeds.

How do you measure a joint without a scale?

Split the eighth into equal piles by eye. Seven roughly even piles from an eighth gives you half-gram joints.
