Rolling Your Own With New Mexico Dispensary Flower: Tips, Cones and Sizes

Quick answer: If you bought flower at a New Mexico dispensary and want to roll it yourself, pick your paper or cone by how much you want in each roll, then pick the tip to match the paper: 6mm for single wide, 7mm or 8mm for 1 1/4, and 8mm or 12mm for king size and cones. An eighth (3.5g) fills three 1g cones with a little left over, or about seven half-gram rolls. Roll and smoke at home or at a licensed consumption lounge. New Mexico's Cannabis Control Division says public use isn't allowed.

Pre-rolls vs rolling your own: which should you buy?

Pre-rolls are easy: grab, go, done. They're handy for trying a new strain or when you don't want to roll.

Rolling your own from flower gives you:

• Your choice of flower. You're not limited to whatever the dispensary pre-rolled.
• Your choice of size. Roll a small one for yourself or a big one for the group.
• Your choice of build. Paper, leaf cone, tip size, cone or straight: all your call.
• Consistency. Same paper, same tip, same fill weight, and every roll comes out the same.

Price-wise, it depends on the shop and the product, so compare menus. For a lot of people it comes down to control.

How much flower goes in each roll?

Dispensary flower is sold by weight. Here's the math for common amounts:

How much you actually put in each roll is up to you. The table just helps you plan how many cones or tips to have on hand. A 1g cone like a Nanner Barrel wants to be filled close to full, so plan on about a gram each.

Which paper or cone size fits how much you roll?

• Small, solo rolls: single wide papers and a 6mm Slim Jim tip.
• Everyday rolls: 1 1/4 papers with a 7mm Midway, or an 8mm Big Boy for a fuller roll.
• Long, slim rolls: king size slim with a 7mm or 8mm tip.
• Big rolls and sharing: king size papers with a Big Boy or 12mm wide tip.

How do you pick a tip for dispensary flower?

The tip matches the paper, not the strain. Two quick rules:

1. The paper has to wrap it. If the gum line won't reach over the tip, the tip is too wide for that paper.
2. Go wider for bigger rolls. A big, heavy roll on a skinny tip pinches and sags right above the tip. A wider tip keeps it open and holds its shape.

If you roll 1 1/4 papers and don't know where to start, start with the Midway. If you roll king size for the group, try the 12 mm Sample (two tips, $6) before committing to a pack.

Banana leaf cone or paper for dispensary flower?

Both work. Leaf cones are thicker, so they usually burn slower and feel sturdier, which is nice for a longer session or passing around. They want a full, even pack and sealed storage. How should you prep the flower?

• Break it up evenly. Medium texture rolls and packs best. Powder packs too dense, and chunks leave gaps.
• Pull stems out. They poke holes in papers and throw off the burn.
• Keep it at a comfortable condition, not crispy-dry and not damp. Very dry flower is dusty and burns fast. Damp flower won't stay lit.

What New Mexico rules should you know?

These points come straight from the Cannabis Control Division's FAQ and its Quick Reference Guide for Personal Use:

• Age: adult-use sales are for people 21 or older, with a valid ID.
• Purchase limits: at one time, adult-use customers can buy up to 2 ounces of cannabis, 16 grams of concentrate, and 800 milligrams of edibles.
• Where to consume: in a private residence or a licensed consumption lounge. The CCD says use while driving or in public spaces (restaurants, parks, sidewalks) is illegal.
• Storage: keep cannabis out of public view and out of reach of children and pets. The Quick Reference Guide says to keep it in its original packaging, or keep the label if the packaging gets damaged.
• In-state only: the CCD guide says product must be an intrastate (in-state) purchase.
