How to Roll a Joint Without a Filter Tip
Quick answer: Yes, you can roll a joint with just papers. Fill the paper evenly but stop a little short of the mouth end, roll as usual, and roll that end slightly tighter. Then pinch the empty paper at the mouth end so it narrows and holds its shape, leaving it open enough to draw through. Grind a bit finer than usual so fewer loose pieces reach your mouth.
This guide covers the changes you make when there's no tip. For the full basics, start with how to roll a joint.

The tuck is the hard part without a tip, because there's nothing firm at the end to hold the paper's curve. Use a 1 1/4 paper, which is a forgiving size to learn on, fill it lightly and go slowly at the mouth end. A slightly under-filled joint is much easier to tuck than an overfilled one.
What changes without a tip?
A tip does three jobs: it gives you a firm core to tuck around, keeps the mouth end open, and stops bits of flower from reaching your mouth. Without one, you handle those jobs with technique:
- No core to tuck around, so the tuck takes a little more care.
- The mouth end can pinch shut or get soggy, so you roll it tighter.
- Loose bits can come through, so you grind finer and leave a gap.
More on what a tip does in what is a filter tip.
Steps
- Grind a little finer. Medium-fine, not powder. Smaller pieces pack tighter at the mouth end and fall through less.
- Lay the paper. Glue strip facing up, along the edge away from you.
- Fill, leaving a gap. Spread flower evenly along the crease, stopping a short way from the end you'll smoke from. That empty bit of paper becomes the mouth end.
- Shape. Roll the paper back and forth between your fingers until the flower forms an even tube.
- Tuck from the mouth end. Start the tuck at the mouth end and keep it snug there, then work it along the length.
- Roll up and seal. Roll toward the glue strip, lick it lightly and press it closed.
- Firm up the mouth end. Roll the mouth end between your fingers to tighten it, then pinch the empty paper so it narrows slightly. Don't twist it shut; you need to draw through it.
- Pack and twist the other end. Pack lightly with a pen and twist it shut.
How do you keep the mouth end from collapsing?
- Roll the last section a little tighter than the rest.
- Keep your lips and fingers dry. A damp end closes up.
- Hold it lightly. Pinching the end flattens it.
- Stop before the end gets hot to hold. Without a tip, what's left is a short stub called a roach.
Need a quick tip?
If you'd rather have a crutch, fold one from a strip of plain, unprinted card or tip paper: a few accordion folds (a W), then roll the rest around it. Skip printed card and business cards; ink and coatings aren't meant to be smoked through. Steps in pre-rolled tips vs folding your own. If you'd rather not fold, Das makes ready-to-use tips in 6mm, 7mm, 8mm and 12mm widths; the filter tip size guide shows which fits your paper.
With a tip or without?
| What changes | Without a tip | With a tip |
|---|---|---|
| Rolling | Tuck takes more care | Tip guides the tuck |
| Mouth end | Can pinch or get soggy | Stays round and open |
| Loose bits | Some get through | Mostly stopped |
| End of the joint | Leaves a short stub (a roach) | You smoke down to the tip |

Frequently asked questions
Can you roll a joint without a filter?
Yes. Leave a little empty paper at the mouth end, roll that end tighter and pinch it narrow, but leave it open so you can draw.
What can I use instead of a filter tip?
A strip of plain, unprinted card or tip paper, folded into a W. Avoid printed card.
Is smoking without a filter tip worse?
A filter tip is a mouthpiece, not a health device. It keeps the mouth end open and loose bits out of your mouth, but it doesn't make smoking safer.
Why does my tipless joint keep collapsing at the end?
The mouth end gets pinched and damp. Roll it tighter, keep flower back from the edge and hold it lightly.
