How to Roll a Joint With a Filter Tip
Quick answer: Set a tip that matches your paper at one end of the crease, fill evenly, pinch and shape the filling into a tube, tuck the paper edge under it starting at the tip, roll up, and lick the glue strip. Use a 6mm tip for single wide, 7mm–8mm for 1 1/4, and 8mm–12mm for king size.
What you need
- Rolling paper
- A filter tip (crutch): pre-rolled, or a folded strip of tip paper
- Ground flower, medium grind
- A tray or clean, flat surface

Pick the tip size
| Paper | Tip size | Das tip |
|---|---|---|
| Single wide | 6mm | Slim Jim (6mm x 28mm) |
| 1 1/4 | 7mm or 8mm | Midway (7mm x 28mm) or Big Boy (8mm x 37mm) |
| King size | 8mm or 12mm | Big Boy (8mm) or 12mm (12mm x 30mm) |
Pre-rolled tips are round from the start. If you fold your own, see pre-rolled tips vs folding your own.
Steps
- Lay the paper. Glue strip facing up, along the edge farthest from you.
- Set the tip. Place it in the crease at one end, flush with the paper's edge.
- Fill. Spread flower along the crease from the tip to the far end. Keep the amount even.
- Shape. Pinch the paper and roll it back and forth between your thumbs and fingers so the filling packs into a tube.
- Tuck. Start at the tip. Tuck the near edge of the paper under the filling, using the tip as a guide, then work the tuck down the length.
- Roll and seal. Roll up toward the glue strip, lick it lightly, and press it closed from the tip end.
- Pack the end. Tap the joint tip-down, pack the open end lightly with a pen, and twist it shut.
Common mistakes
- Wrong tip size. Too thin leaves the paper loose; too wide stops it closing.
- Uneven fill. The thin side burns first and the joint canoes.
- Too much lick. A wet seam tears or burns unevenly.
- Rolling too tight. It won't draw. You should feel slight resistance, not a wall.
